NIMBUS is Sympatec’s particle size distribution measurement system based on ultrasonic extinction, which is particularly well-suited for analyzing highly concentrated and optically challenging suspensions.

The NIMBUS system is based on ultrasonic extinction. The method involves measuring the attenuation of an ultrasonic signal in a suspension at several frequencies. The attenuation arises from a combination of absorption and scattering phenomena caused by the particles, and the measured signal is converted into a particle size distribution using a computational inversion model. The method is based on acoustic scattering theory, which takes into account particle size, concentration and the acoustic properties of the medium. You can find more information about the technique on Sympatec’s website via this link.

NIMBUS is a benchtop measuring instrument designed specifically for low-viscosity liquids and highly concentrated suspensions and emulsions. The measurement range covers particle sizes from approximately 0.1 µm to 3,000 µm, and it is also suitable for optically turbid or completely opaque samples without dilution or pre-treatment.

The measurement is carried out in a flow-through cell, where the sample is circulated at a controlled flow rate and the ultrasonic signal is measured at multiple frequencies. The result is typically a particle size distribution categorised into 31 size classes, along with information on the concentration of the dispersed phase. The measurement can be repeated every 1–2 minutes, enabling rapid analysis and monitoring.

For process applications, NIMBUS technology is also available in Sympatec’s OPUS system, which integrates measurement based on ultrasonic attenuation directly into the production process as a continuous in-line solution.
