Morphology

In addition to particle size and distribution, particle shape may impact material functionality or process control significantly. Malvern produces systems based on microscopic technology and advanced image analysis. These methods help analyse the particle shape and volume n both powder and liquid samples.

Benefits of morphology

In morphological analysis, automated imaging is used to gain detailed data of the particles in the material being analysed.

By combining the results of particle size analysis (e.g. particle length) with particle shape analysis (e.g. convexity, diameter) in morphological analysis, a complete image of the material can be achieved.

The analysis provides detailed 2D images of each particle in the sample.  Image analysis of particles, together with a size and shape analysis, is an effective tool for detecting agglomerates and unwanted particles, for example.

The automated image analysis processes thousands of particles, which makes it a rapid method.  Conventional microscopic analysis only measures a fraction of the sample compared to automated imaging, which is why it cannot provide statistically reliable results – while automated imaging can!

The image capturing is fully automated, as is the analysis and particle size and shape categorisation that occurs afterwards. This makes the analysis fast and will not take up much of your time.
